"Yalla! We've been eagerly waiting for this family trip. We originally planned to visit Egypt to see the pyramids, but with the war in neighboring Israel, it felt too risky since Egypt is so close. After flipping through a list of 100 must-see places, we decided to head to Morocco for the Sahara Desert instead.
Three highlights of Morocco: the Sahara Desert, Riad courtyard villas, and tagine.
It was my first time seeing a desert, and it was just as magnificent as in movies. The silence there was profound—no noise, just the feeling of the wind without the sound of it. Our guide told us about a family of nine living in the desert (I was shocked at first), and we even visited their tent. It was a mix of awe at their resilience and sympathy for their tough life in such a harsh environment.
Moroccan architecture is unique, especially the Riads—traditional courtyard villas converted from old Moroccan houses. Due to the modesty of the Islamic culture, the exteriors look like simple, earthy castles with high, plain walls. But once you step through the door, it's like entering a hidden paradise with fountains, lush greenery, intricate mosaic decorations, elegant lighting, and sometimes even a pool in the middle of the villa. Every night we stayed at a different Riad, and walking through the dark corridor, I was always excited to see what beautiful garden would greet us next.
As for the food, out of 10 meals, 9 included tagine—a spiced meat stew cooked in a special pot that keeps the dish moist. I found the flavors quite suited to the Taiwanese palate. I wondered why I'd never had it in Taiwan before, so I looked it up and found a few restaurants in Taipei that serve Moroccan cuisine. I’ll definitely check them out to see how authentic they are.
Lastly, a big thank you to our driver and guide, Rachid El , who took care of all our needs across different ages, making sure our trip went smoothly—even through Morocco's biggest flood in 40 years! Good job! I hope one day you can visit Taiwan so I can show you our incredible 7-11 stores."
